The origins of Portwest began in 1904 when Charles Hughes commenced his business as a small retail shop in Westport, Co. Mayo. Padraig Hughes, nephew of Charles Hughes, joined the business in 1936. After the death of his uncle in 1949, Padraig took over the running of the company until his retirement in 1988. For 52 years he oversaw the development of the wholesale business, the building of Hotel Westport, and the development of Westport Clothing Company, now known as Portwest Ltd.
Today, Portwest has grown into a global business with nine warehouse locations in the UK, USA, Australia (x2), New Zealand, UAE, Panama, Ireland and Poland, sales offices in the UK, USA, Australia, UAE, Ireland and Poland and customer service staff in over 130 countries.
Portwest specializes in the design and manufacture of workwear, protective clothing, footwear, gloves and PPE accessories. Well known as market leaders in Flame Resistant garments and personal protective equipment under the brand names Araflame, Bizflame, Bizweld, and Modaflame. Products meet international safety standards including ISO, EN, GOST, ANSI and NFPA. Portwest recently launched a new, trend led collection of High Visibility workwear under the PW3 brand and is in the process of launching two new collections of cutting edge workwear garments. In 2018, Portwest launched a lone worker GPS locator devise, the first of its kind in safety.
